Letter: Mendrick doesn't speak for DuPage

An ABC News story reported DuPage County is the largest county in Illinois to defy our state's new law banning assault weapons. Their reporting is not correct.

We law-abiding citizens of DuPage County and our DuPage County Board support our state's legislation banning high-capacity magazines and assault weapons.

With no regard for the will of his constituents or the county board, County Sheriff James Mendrick appears to have fallen into line with other sheriffs who believe they have a right to pick and choose which state laws and governor mandates they will enforce.

Mendrick, a Republican who ran unopposed in the last election, does not representative of his constituents with his arrogant declaration of defiance to Illinois law.

An elected officer of the law who refuses to enforce laws he personally opposes should be removed. Mendrick might encounter difficulties in finding a job that doesn't require adherence to laws.
