Our endorsement for DuPage County treasurer: Gwen Henry

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

In the race for DuPage County treasurer, longtime Republican incumbent Gwen Henry of Wheaton is facing a challenge from Democrat Don Potoczny.

Potoczny, a retired Army colonel from Naperville, is a strong candidate with a broad range of experience. He has an impressive resume from his years of military service. He has developed training programs, led software integration projects and managed a multimillion-dollar construction project at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Potoczny says he would bring fresh ideas and new energy to the treasurer's office, which is responsible for collecting taxes, paying the county's bills and investing its money.

But Henry has worked to improve returns on tax dollar investments and enhance services in the treasurer's office since first being elected in 2006. She implemented efforts to accept credit cards for property tax payments and partial payments from property owners who want to budget their taxes.

As for her qualifications, Henry is a certified public accountant with an admirable record of public service. She is a former mayor of Wheaton and served as a county board member and forest preserve commissioner.

Under Henry's leadership, the treasurer's office has run smoothly. So while we like Potoczny, we don't see a reason to make a change.

Henry is endorsed.
