Endorsement: Nizamuddin for Illinois House Dist. 48

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

The differences between 48th state House District candidates Azam Nizamuddin, a Bloomingdale Democrat, and Jennifer Sanalitro, a Hanover Park Republican, were stark in a discussion about the backlash to the SAFE-T Act, a criminal justice measure Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law in 2021. Nizamuddin, an attorney who lectures on constitutional issues, acknowledges some tweaks should be made to clarify the legislation but would maintain its vital social equity components. Sanalitro, a sales executive who advocates for the law's total repeal, repeated social media misinformation about no-cash bail, nondetainable offenses and "The Purge."

On other issues - ranging from gun control and green jobs to inflation and the influx of migrants sent to Illinois by the governor of Texas - Nizamuddin offers nuanced, thoughtful answers that show he is better-suited to be a state legislator. Nizamuddin is endorsed.
