Our endorsement for Illinois Senate District 23: Suzanne "Suzy" Glowiak Hilton
-
Suzanne Glowiak Hilton, left, and Dennis Reboletti are running for the Illinois Senate District 23 seat.
Voters in Illinois Senate District 23 have two experienced candidates to consider in the November election.
Suzanne "Suzy" Glowiak Hilton, a Western Springs Democrat, has represented the 24th District since 2019. But because of redistricting, she's now vying for the newly drawn 23rd Senate seat.
Meanwhile, the Republican in the race -- Dennis Reboletti of Elmhurst -- is a familiar name in DuPage County politics. He served eight years in the state House before leaving in 2015 after a failed state Senate run. He is currently the Addison Township supervisor.
As a former Will County prosecutor, Reboletti was an advocate for law-and-order issues during his House tenure. So we were not surprised when he told us that one of his top issues would be trying to repeal the SAFE-T Act. He said he doesn't believe the legislation is fixable and criticized Glowiak Hilton for refusing to take a vote on it.
Glowiak Hilton said she didn't participate in the vote on the SAFE-T Act because she disagrees with "quite a few portions of the bill." But she says she didn't want to vote "no" because the legislation includes "some great things," including funding for law enforcement training and equipment.
She says there is still enough time to tweak and fix the legislation.
Despite their differences over the SAFE-T Act, both candidates understand that crime is an issue. This year, Glowiak Hilton was the Senate sponsor of a law that makes it easier to pursue those who commit smash-and-grabs and other organized retail crimes.
While Reboletti has a record of working with both sides of the aisle, so does Glowiak Hilton. She is a moderate who has sought bipartisanship during her time in Springfield. She also wants to work to improve ethics in the legislature.
Glowiak Hilton is endorsed.
