Letter: Casten is right choice for Congress, Dist. 6

The Daily Herald got it right in endorsing Sean Casten for the IL-06 Democratic primary.

The editorial board noted that Casten "stands firm on his liberal convictions ... but presses his case with a calm persistence that leaves room for reasonable debate and discussion."

Anyone who's attended one of the numerous public forums Casten's hosted since taking office in 2019 can attest to that.

While many elected officials shy away from tough (and often divisive) issues, Casten never has. Just last month, he held an in-person town hall focused on inflation. He's held discussions on important and timely topics, from the horrific events at the Capitol on Jan. 6 to immigration reform, climate change and prescription drug costs. As one of the first front-line Democrats to call for an impeachment inquiry into Trump, Casten even held a town hall to communicate his decision to his constituents.

Through these and 50-plus additional public forums, Casten has answered questions from constituents (not just supporters, but people who disagree with him, too) and provided a space for respectful dialogue. He's informed - and listened. Because his job isn't only to talk with us in the district; it's to bring our voices back to DC to write legislation and take votes that align with our values and our feedback.

The Herald's endorsement also notes his opponent making "downright incorrect claims about Casten's record." Voters have seen these repeated lies and attacks, and we are tired of the negativity and dishonesty. Casten's message, meanwhile, is positive, focused on our commonalities and unity.

It's great having a congressman who is so accessible, reasonable and honest. Let's be sure we vote to keep him.
