Endorsement: Dias for the Democrats in House 62 primary

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

Lake County Democrats want to keep House District 62 in the blue column this November, and their best bet is with Grayslake Trustee Laura Faver Dias as the Democratic standard-bearer.

Dias (pronounced DYE-ess) and two other Democrats are contesting the seat in the June 28 primary. County board member Terry Wilke of Round Lake Beach and Thomas Maillard of Waukegan, the president of Young Dems of Lake County, are good Democrats and campaigners in their own right.

Dias, however, has the money and endorsements to see it through. She has the backing of outgoing state Sen. Melinda Bush and Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and recently received $55,000 from Pritzker's campaign fund. She's also backed by both teachers unions and a host of other organized labor.

Moreover, as a trustee, Dias has not been afraid to disagree with what appears to be the status quo. As Democrats are likely to retain a majority, members who can disagree without being disagreeable are a valuable commodity.

The House 62 seat became wide open when state Rep. Sam Yingling decided to run for the state Senate instead.

If elected to the legislature, Dias pledges to resign from the Grayslake Village Board. She is endorsed.
