Endorsement: Cain for Illinois House Dist. 66

This endorsement is a consensus opinion of the Daily Herald Editorial Board.

It is a long-standing policy that the Daily Herald does not endorse candidates for elected positions if they already hold a different elected position and intend to keep both offices if successful.

Therefore, our endorsement for the Republican primary in House District 66 is not complicated. We endorse Connie Cain of Gilberts in the June 28 primary.

Her opponent, Arin Thrower, of West Dundee, appears to be a fine candidate for the legislature, except she is also the elected supervisor of West Dundee Township, a seat she intends to keep if she is elected to the state legislature. The main Daily Herald objection to one person holding more than one office is because of the opportunity it presents to accumulate power and influence in the hands of one person.

Meanwhile, Cain is a solid candidate herself. She has mainline Republican positions - is opposed to abortion, will work to protect the right to bear arms, considers herself a fiscal conservative and believes that in order to fix pensions in Illinois, the state's residents should be given a constitutional amendment to vote on.

Cain also says that public schools in Illinois suffer from bloated administrations and says she would encourage consolidation of small elementary and high school districts to streamline the running of local schools. Such consolidation is not a new idea for Illinois, but we welcome it coming back up.

Cain is endorsed.
