Letter: Efforts helping reduce stigma of mental illness

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it's a time to celebrate efforts to reduce the stigma around mental health and improve access to care. I am grateful for state legislative leaders who worked with behavioral health providers to prioritize mental health in this year's budget.

It has been an honor to participate in this process on behalf of amazing mental health staff across the state. As a result, there will be significantly more resources available to provide care, fewer barriers to get help, and a better-equipped workforce ready to champion hope in Illinois.

Nationally, the 9-8-8 crisis number beginning in July will be an incredible resource. Rosecrance has provided similar services, and we know the benefits this brings. In addition, the president's mental health strategy will go a long way toward these same goals.

While I'm encouraged, mental health remains a sensitive topic. Now may be the best chance we'll have to ask how our loved ones are truly doing. The more we build these connections, the brighter someone's day will be.

If you're nervous about speaking up, or if you're struggling, know that you're not alone. There are many resources available for information, support groups, or treatment. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a great place to turn, and the Call 4 Calm text line (text "talk" to 552020) is available.

And, as always, caring Rosecrance staff would be honored to talk with you. Please remember that together we can help those who struggle with mental illness and work to end the

stigma. Life's waiting.
