Letter: 'Don't say gay' law misinterpreted

One of your Saturday Our View items started with, "In the frightening era of "don't say gay" and went on to announce some welcome news regarding support for at-risk people. Having a gay family member, I agree that's good news. But I must disagree with your characterization of the "frightening era" comment. It seems to refer to Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill.

The bill says, "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."

Doesn't mention gays or anything about the LGBTQ community and particularly, nothing negative or biased against them.

As a parent, grandparent and great grandparent, I don't want some stranger who has no legal or moral responsibility for our young children teaching them about sex, gender, etc.

Do you?
