Letter: Instead of creating more debt, pay it down

I am appalled that our representatives in Springfield are continuing their fiscally irresponsible behavior.

Illinois has taken in higher-than-expected revenues that will leave the state with a projected year-end surplus. Apparently, our representatives in Springfield felt that money burning a hole in their pockets. The result? The Illinois budget includes $1.8 billion of mostly temporary tax relief.

When Illinois households are now on the hook for an average of $110,000 in government-worker retirement debt, using this revenue for temporary tax relief is ludicrous.

Paying down debt would be a much more responsible action.
