Freedom, responsibility

I hear people lament, "I don't want to mask or get vaccinated because it infringes on my personal freedom," or variations along a similar theme. While I sympathize with the sentiment, I submit that "personal freedom" in America is not "free." With personal freedom comes "personal responsibility." Without actively following and embracing both freedom and responsibility, there is chaos.

Having served in the Army, survived the turmoil of the '60s and '70s, and lived in the chaos of urban Detroit, I have a well-reasoned opinion of what is significant vs. minor inconveniences.

The anti-mask-anti-vaxers are outspoken about their personal freedoms but seem to ignore the responsibility required by all of us to each other. They fail to acknowledge that vaccinations partnered with mask-wearing will protect them and protect others.

In my case, I am a very healthy 72-year-old, fully vaccinated, who wears a mask in public areas. I view both as minor inconveniences that merit little concern, with neither rising to the outrage and disrespect often on display. Science confirms that both vaccines and masks work and work well.

As an American, you have the responsibility to obey our laws, serve on a jury, serve in the military if called, pay taxes, and consider and protect the interests, health, and welfare of your fellow citizens as you exercise your personal freedoms.

If you fear vaccinations, think about polio, smallpox, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis, measles, pneumonia, and a myriad other vaccines that have made the US one of the healthiest nations on earth. Then consider the odds: 822,000-plus dead due to contracting COVID vs. three (3) dead due to vaccines. Let logic and your "personal responsibility" guide and protect you and your fellow citizens.

Masks are indeed a minor issue. Wear them. Protect me and protect yourself.
