The Big Lie

It is mind-boggling how anyone could assert, against all facts and logic, that Joe Biden and the Democrats "stole" the 2020 presidential election. Yet, Donald Trump continues to make this noxious claim without a shred of evidence and after repudiation in scores of court cases and multiple recounts around the country.

This Big Lie spawned the violent, deadly insurrection that raged in our nation's Capitol one year ago.

Beyond anything else that the former president did or is accused of having done, the Big Lie and his other blatant attempts to subvert our electoral system provide ample proof to any sentient person that Donald Trump has no regard for the U.S. Constitution or the rule of law, making him the antithesis of our democratic ideals and unfit to hold office.

Much, much worse, that so many Republicans, including elected officials at every level, are either turning a blind eye to or actively promoting the Big Lie is a blunt warning that the great American experiment is in peril.

One man alone cannot overturn our election process, but when so many in the GOP are willing to play along to protect their own political aspirations and those of their party, we should all be alarmed that the collapse of democracy may be near. No citizen should put personal or party ambitions over the good of the country. The riot of January 6, 2021 is an ugly example of what happens when they do.
