Curtain: The August Newspaper Movie of the Month

'All the King's Men'

There are two versions of this film, both based on the 1946 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Robert Penn Warren. Both use newspaper reporter Jack Burden to tell the story of fictional rising star demogugue Willie Stark, pattered after legendary Louisanna Gov. Huey Long. Burden first is captivated by Stark but becomes disillusioned by Stark's ugly metamorphosis. The 1949 classic stars Broderick Crawford as Stark and John Ireland as Burden. The 2006 remake starts Sean Penn as Stark and Jude Law as Burden. Both are outstanding movies.
