A Palatine letter to the editor: Voters need reporting on legislative maps
The League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area extends our thanks to the Daily Herald for its clear and easily understood explanation of the recent reshaping of district maps in Illinois. It is essential that voters be made aware of how district borders affect election results. The League of Women Voters opposes district maps that favor one political party over another.
An imbalance resulting from these maps may lower voter turnout because citizens assume that their vote doesn't matter because the election has already been decided when the maps were drawn.
Maps that favor one party have the potential to discourage candidates from the minority party from running for office. This is a disservice to the people of Illinois.
Fair and balanced maps are essential to fair elections and an informed and engaged electorate. The newly drawn, gerrymandered map is now on the governor's desk. The League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area asks Gov. Pritzker to reconsider the proposed district map so that voters and candidates - Republican and Democrat - will have an equal say in the future of our state.
