Wordsmithing won't solve county's problems

In her July 20 guest editorial, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle says her board and others are hard at work figuring out how to spend $1 billion in taxpayers' money that comes from the American Rescue Plan Act. Preckwinkle says she is confident the board will put forward a thoughtful and comprehensive plan.

She is a good wordsmith. She writes of equity, engagement and excellence. The funding will be transformative. Important and innovative ideas. I don't share her confidence. She says next to nothing about any fundamental need for the money. Not even a thought of ideas or solutions.

Where's the beef? I have heard that Ms. Preckwinkle wants to take a public health approach to crime. What does that involve exactly? Meanwhile crime in Cook County rages on unchecked.

Methinks the county board president is wordsmithing while Rome burns.
