Economist's background worth considering

This is in response to Mr. DeFilippis' recent letter criticizing Ralph Martire's op-ed of June 20.

Mr. Martire comes to his op-ed with credentials including a professorship of public policy at Roosevelt University and CEO of a non-partisan think tank, CTBA, committed to fair state fiscal, economic and budget policies. Mr. De Filippis has not provided any of his economic background other than his opinion.

Mr. De Filippis cites the failure of the Illinois graduated income tax to pass to disagree with Mr. Martire's policy recommendations, but failed to mention the tens of millions of dollars wealthy corporations and individuals contributed to their anti-tax-the-rich organizations' campaigns and their misrepresentations of the facts during their massive TV ads opposing the tax increase.

I have attended several public presentations by Mr. Martire, and he does have some honest economic solutions to the Illinois pension problem, despite what Mr. De Filippis says, but the Illinois legislature so far has not adopted them.
