Beyond the Byline: Kane develops Sunday's local-news report

Deputy City Editor James Kane's mission is to get Saturday's local news into Sunday's paper, coordinating the work of reporters and photographers and going to the scene himself when needed.

His interest in getting the latest news into print isn't surprising, given that he began his career as a night police reporter.

After graduating from North Central College in Naperville and the journalism school at the University of Missouri, he worked for daily papers in Davenport, Iowa, and Hammond, Indiana. He also spent five years covering the West and Northwest suburbs for Suburban Trib.

He has been working for the Daily Herald since 1988, for many years as business editor.

For the last 14 years, he has been the Saturday editor for the Sunday paper, as well as a local news editor for the Northwest suburbs.

He has won reporting awards from the Hoosier State Press Association and the Chicago Headline Club.

He spends hours every day reading a variety of newspapers and he enjoys studying metropolitan issues.

He lives in a Berwyn bungalow and during the warmer months helps out on the family farm in Sterling, Illinois.
