Existing system is true fair tax

This letter is in response to Dan Sherry's May 27 letter in the Daily Herald. He states, "I find it unconscionable that under our current tax system, the less fortunate in our state pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than the most fortunate Illinoisans." This is flat-out incorrect. Our current state income tax system utilizes a 4.95% flat tax. Consequently, all Illinoisans pay a 4.95% tax on their income. If your taxable income is $1,000 you pay $49.50 and if your taxable income is $100,000 you pay $4,950. Now that is a fair tax.
