We need a better sense of proportion

The CDC released preliminary estimates of the 2019-2020 flu season with the resulting estimates: There were three 8 million to 54 million flu illnesses, 17 million to 25 million flu medical visits, three 90 million to 710 million flu hospitalizations and 23,000 to 59,000 flu deaths. Yet, with the above resulting estimates, there were very few, if any, closings of schools, bars and restaurants, sporting events and even religious celebrations.

Can we allow this coronavirus to cripple our economy, close small businesses and have multitudes of workers applying for unemployment benefits? Are we ready to face a recession that could last years?

I do not mean to diminish the severity of the pandemic, I just wish that it could be viewed with a sense of proportionality based on the number of reported cases and deaths.
