Demand a new way
I reluctantly came to Chicago in the fall of 1959. Employment opportunities were abundant. I went to work the very next day. Wages were good Illinois had no income tax. Illinois" sales tax was much lower than it is today. A house was not only a home, but a tremendous hedge against inflation. There was one tollway that was to become a freeway in the not-too-distant future. Illinois ranked high as a place to live and prosper.
Now look at it. Illinois is broke and the population is declining as people flee seeking a more affordable environment. Politicians scream for more money. If it's there, tax it. If it's already taxed, increase it. It's not working.
It's time for a new approach. Eliminate the sales tax, cut all real estate taxes by 50 percent and eliminate the tollway and the tollway authority. Then insist that politicians go to work and fix the many problems plaguing Illinois.
Finally, it's imperative that we citizens pay attention and demand it.
