Why should U.S. help Ukraine?

My grandparents escaped from Ukraine shortly after the 1905 Revolution in Russia. Interestingly they never used the word Ukraine, but rather just said that they were Russian.

This might be because as Jews, they were never allowed to become citizens.

Thus, my question in the midst of all this current Ukranian hoopla is, Why in the world is the U.S. giving Ukraine $400 million dollars in military aid.

Sure, we could use this money for a better purpose anywhere else.
