Citizens have rights and responsibilities

There are certain rights granted to citizens of the United States. It matters not whether they are citizens by birth or by naturalization. Some of these rights include the freedom to express yourself, like freely writing editorials to the newspapers, to worship as you wish and the freedom to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

But, with the rights of a citizen come great responsibilities. Responsibilities like supporting and defending the Constitution, participating in the democratic process. respecting and obeying federal, state and local laws and to defend the country if the need should arise.

Our times are crying out for all of us to reflect on our commitment as citizens. To reflect on what it means to share in the values of both our rights, as well as our responsibilities. And while we're at it, we should reflect on what it means to be a patriot.

Many celebrate the New England Patriots when they win a football game, but the patriot I'm speaking of is far more than a member of a football team. Not to take anything away from the team, but can we as citizens, during this critical time in our nation's history, stand as true patriots who vigorously support their country and are prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors?

Just a little reflection to think about from a fellow citizen.
