Who would want to make us less healthy?

Once upon a time California decided that the MPG for autos registered in that State needed to be higher than the federal government dictated. So all of the car manufacturers decided to go with the stricter standards rather than produce multiple versions of autos to comply with several different standards. After all, if you meet the highest standards, you can't violate the lower standards.

Lead started to disappear from the atmosphere, carbon dioxide dropped, smog was reduced, cars went further per gallon of gas with people saving the money. You get the picture. People were simply better off. As the older cars reached the end of their useful life, they were replaced by these more efficient cards through normal attrition.

Now what kind of lunatic would come along and make people less healthy? What kind of fool would demand that people only have access to poorer performing and less efficient fuel standards? What kind of idiot would sue states and auto companies that were merrily producing better, cleaner, more efficient cars (and trucks of course) and contributing to a healthier environment and a healthier population? It's like ordering that modern cancer treatments had to be replaced by the old mustard gas treatments of last century.

Then I remember who was responsible for appointing the head of the EPA. Suddenly all my questions were answered. Silly me! I should have known all along.
