How respect for life is shown

The mystery of why abortion doctor Ulrich Klopfer saved the fetuses of 2,246, preserving them in his garage invites speculation. Personally, it brings home the enormity of the problem and vividly presents evidence of the inhumanity of the practice.

The churches need to re-examine themselves on the uses of artificial birth control. The abortion opponents need to examine their stand on what the late Cardinal Bernardine called the seamless garment of respect for human life well beyond conception and well beyond the mother's womb. There is life after birth.

Women considering abortion face uncertain futures. Who will care for them? How will they care for their babies? They may need the basics of food, clothing, and shelter.

They need counseling, therapy, education, training in the skills that will enable them to earn the wherewithal for raising the child - jobs, day-care, transportation, rent, groceries, even if a "husband" has a job. Politicians who exploit the issue and self-righteous church people need to shed their hypocrisy and support programs and legislation that will demand and require a living wage.

To not pay a living wage is to attack the mother-child relationship whether part of a family or not.

The "socialists" who demand a living wage and concomitant social services for all full-time workers are clearly the ones who respect life and take Cardinal Bernardine's admonition to heart.
