Policy furthers legacy of compassion

I applaud District 211 in their proposal of the new Transgender Access Policy. As a concerned resident, I attended and spoke at many board meetings in the fall of 2015 and winter of 2016 in support of equality for transgender students following the OCR findings. During that time, I was repeatedly exposed to much hateful, ignorant rhetoric by the Parents for Privacy group. I am forever changed by that experience.

As outlined in Superintendent Dr. Cate's thoughtful public statement, there have been many advancements in the understanding and acceptance of transgender individuals, in society and in our community, "for the better." It's time now to take this next step in adopting this policy that furthers D211's legacy of compassion and equality for all students. I am proud of District 211 for taking this step. Our community is one of love and acceptance. Continuing those fundamental values through inclusion in our schools is essential.
