Call for good fiscal sense may be too late

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, a staunch fiscal conservative, is considering a primary run against Donald Trump for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination. He says he thinks "the Republican Party has lost its way on debt, spending, and financial matters."

While that may be true, what he's not taking into account - and what dooms his campaign from the start - is that his party no longer gives a hoot about fiscal policy. The GOP's sole interest under this administration is the enabling of a president whose focus is feeding his own extreme narcissism through fomentation and divisiveness.

If there are any decent, responsible Republicans left who love our nation, its underlying ideals and its people (all of them, not just a select few), they'd better speak up loudly and soon. Otherwise, this once Grand Old Party will ultimately be rendered to history's trash heap.
