Abortion restrictions lifted too easily

Every news outlet described the horrific crime of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez' murder and the cutting of her "baby" from her womb. Under the reproductive rights bills the Illinois House and Senate passed, that infant in her womb would have no more right to survive or be protected under Illinois law than would her adenoids or tonsils.

I'm deeply concerned, as well, regarding the change to parental notification for abortions. Earlier this year, the General Assembly correctly, in my view, raised the smoking age in Illinois to 21, precisely because some younger folks often make poor choices on issues with lifelong effects. Current Illinois law already allows abortions by minors without parental permission. By removing parental notification, young people who cannot vote, buy alcohol or now even smoke in Illinois will have an absolute right to abortion here.

Surely, this issue needs much more debate.
