The pledge and school prayer

I just read a letter to the editor (Jan. 11) claiming that public school shootings have somehow been caused by the elimination of prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools by a mysterious "they." Let me set the record straight.

First, the Pledge of Allegiance has been said in every public school every day for a number of years (105 ILCS 5/27-3 effective 7/3/02). Second, as long as there are algebra tests, there will be prayer in public schools.

For those of you who believe that "they" (sometimes translated as "liberals" or "Democrats" by Fox news and others) are somehow intent on destroying society, please be sure of your facts.

We may have our philosophical differences, but we need to work together for the common good not just pass on rumor, innuendo and dare I say "fake news."
