Editorial: 'Hate is too great a burden to bear'

The concerted effort this week to deliver bombs to numerous high-profile Democratic political leaders and CNN's New York headquarters is the latest evidence of how fractured our society has become.

As the investigation into the origins of these acts of terrorism unfolds, we caution you not to succumb to that which likely motivated the person or people who sent the bombs.

Meanwhile, today, we'll let people of all political stripes, even those who predate our United States, talk about the toxicity of hate, for they do so more eloquently than we could.

"Love is wise; hatred is foolish. In this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other, we have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don't like. We can only live together in that way. But if we are to live together, and not die together, we must learn a kind of charity and a kind of tolerance, which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet."

- Bertrand Russell
