Endorsement: Daily Herald backs Morrison over Trevor in Illinois House District 54

Tom Morrison is a smart fiscal conservative who makes a practice of talking with people who disagree with him.

The Palatine Republican has actively worked for solutions to the state's fiscal mess; advocating 401(k) plans for midcareer and younger state employees. While not adopted, his work has advanced the debate.

Morrison's positions on social issues are to the right of our comfort zone, particularly regarding LGBT freedoms. But the legislature will remain safely in more centrist hands.

The Democrat in the race, Maggie Trevor, is a solid candidate - a former educator and owner of a market research firm specializing in health care.

But in a state government that could soon be Democratic at almost every level, voices like Morrison's will take on greater importance. We endorse him.
