Harper tax hike is the right plan at right time

In Harper College's district, which covers Cook, Lake, Kane and McHenry counties, we have such vibrant communities full of great schools, people, and businesses. But one concern is that employers in our area are lacking qualified employees as they seek to grow their companies.

With today's changing workplace and new skill sets needed for these jobs, the readiness of our workforce has been lacking. This deficiency will negatively impact our community's businesses and slow economic growth in our region.

Students, residents, and businesses are looking for more career development opportunities. Thankfully, Harper College recognized this need and took action. With the referendum that they put on the ballot this election, Harper will be able to provide the education and resources needed to fill this skills gap. Students will be better prepared to enter today's workforce, businesses will have the qualified employees they need to thrive, and our residents will see substantial economic opportunities in our vibrant communities.

As a former superintendent in District 211 and former Harper College Board president and member, I wholeheartedly support this referendum to better our workforce, businesses and communities. This is the type of action needed to adapt and take a long-term approach to making beneficial change.

I have a strong belief in the excellence of Harper College. I believe in, and respect, the outstanding staff, administrators and board. If we can drive economic opportunity while preparing our future employees, then our communities, towns and residents will see dividends. I will be voting yes on this much-needed referendum, and I encourage you to do so as well.
