Endorsement: Daily Herald supports Morrison over Davie for Illinois Senate District 29

Julie Morrison of Deerfield is a moderate Democrat with a reputation for working cooperatively with both parties.

She has been a strong proponent for property tax relief, in addition to focusing on gun violence issues, health care and human services. While recognizing that Senate President John Cullerton has been helpful in moving her legislation, she is a longtime supporter of term limits for legislative leaders and says she believes Illinois must have a fairer way to sets its legislative boundaries. Based on her record, we tend to believe she is sincere.

Republican Barrett Davie, of Lake Forest, brings strong business credentials to the race and expresses thoughtful criticism about the need for the state to act more forcefully to get its financial house in order.

Morrison, however, who is a former West Deerfield Township supervisor in addition to her legislative experience, has a local government approach to budgeting and pensions. She is an independent voice within her party and deserves to be returned to Springfield.
