Endorsement: Daily Herald recommends Crespo over Baumer for Illinois House Dist. 44

Fred Crespo has represented his constituents well for the past 11 years in Illinois House District 44, which includes portions of Elgin, Hoffman Estates and Streamwood.

He is chairman of the Appropriations-General Service committee and the Curriculum Policy Committee for Elementary and Secondary Education, giving him important influence.

We appreciate his passion for reducing schools' reliance on property taxes. We question how genuine the Democratic Party's 11th-hour embrace of legislative term limits and an end to gerrymandering really is, but at least Crespo is expressing interest.

Republican opponent Katy Dolan Baumer, the Hanover Township clerk, supports consolidation of overlapping units of government and services as cost-savings efforts.

But the district would be giving up a lot if it gave up Crespo's clout in Springfield. We endorse him.
