Endorsement: The Daily Herald recommends DeWitte over Zettler for Illinois Senate District 33

We've long been impressed by Don DeWitte, appointed earlier this year to the Illinois Senate in the 33rd District following the resignation of Karen McConnaughay shortly after the March primary.

As the mayor of St. Charles, and before that as one of its aldermen, DeWitte performed with focus, collaboration and dedication to get things done and to do so with fiscal sense.

It's clear that his Republican candidacy offers the same attributes and the same pragmatic conservatism for Springfield.

His Democratic opponent, attorney Nancy Zettler of Algonquin, is worthy competition. She's been actively involved politically on behalf of Community Unit District 300 and ran unsuccessfully for the Illinois House two years ago. She's smart, independent and focused.

But DeWitte's record of achievement and his unflappable common sense make him the superior candidate.

We endorse DeWitte.
