Be prepared to help

In the midst of this busy election season, I think it would be appropriate for our towns in the Fox River valley to stop and think about what might be done to help in the disaster in the river valleys of the Carolinas. I am sure, for example, that the police and fire departments in those areas can use some help. Of course, we cannot make the difference between recovery or not, but we can set an example for others to follow; rivers and valleys always combine for disaster, sooner or later.

Naysayers can deny that there is no man-made effect on the climate, but if the fish dying off in Lake Michigan could testify to the effect of the warming water, some would still deny climate change. A study in a recent Economist journal shows that the trend for hurricanes is to fewer, but more violent actions in nature. We need to appreciate that something is going on, but while that is contemplated, we ought to think about what we can do for fellow citizens whose hopes and dreams are being drowned before our eyes.
