Kneeling misconstrued

In response to 'Done with Nike," published in the Daily Herald on Sept. 10, I offer the following as it was expressed by Colin Kaepernick's parents (Caucasian) who adopted him at the age of five weeks, and I paraphrase here: "Colin chose to kneel for the national anthem as a protest to the inequality in our country. He explained his reasons in multiple interviews."

One only need see the thought-provoking movie "BlackkKlansmen" directed by Spike Lee, and currently in theaters, to understand the racial inequality that persists today. Mr. Kaepernick never intended his freedom of expression to be misconstrued as un-American or unpatriotic or anti-military. It is indeed unfortunate that so many people continue to view it in this way.
