Let the facts guide our votes

On Aug. 10, I received two distinctly different news feeds regarding the candidates running to represent Illinois' 6th Congressional District. The first was a Daily Herald letter to the editor from a Wheaton writer. I was surprised to see such a blatant misrepresentation of Sean Casten's words and beliefs, especially with such easy access to view the debate or check Sean's website. Such unsubstantiated generalities remind me of the squirrel technique, let me throw your attention over there to distract you from what's going on here.

Which leads me to the second article, a reminder that one year ago, the Crazy/Stupid Republican of the Day Award was bestowed on Peter Roskam. The article factually listed Peter's voting record, where he ranked last in voting for environmental issues and received an F from the NAACP on civil rights issues, while voting to roll back consumer protections on numerous financial and health programs. Peter's voting record is easily verified on many different websites.

We all have different beliefs and values we want to support and protect. That is why it is vitally important to put the facts out so we can each decide which candidates best represent us and deserve our votes. And so we don't waste precious time chasing squirrels.
