Columnist is a reasonable thinker

Regarding a recent letter critical of columnist Walter Williams: Contrary to other views, I enjoy reading columns by Walter Williams as much as any other columnist in any Chicago paper. He is a reasonable thinker without a lot of hyperbole and negative name or character insinuations as seen in many letters and articles.

In particular, he will often write about what is or has happened on a variety of social and political issues affecting all Americans by taking the time to try and delve into what is behind an issue, its causes and repercussions within the limitations of a newspaper column.

Unfortunately, he is an exception to many writers and reporters, as he goes into his subjects with more depth on issues that are difficult or not always easy or popular for readers to consider. He covers issues that cause some people discomfort because his writings may go against current social and political trends and thoughts.

Just reread his articles of July 25 on not simply trusting everything offered by experts; and Aug. 1 on factors behind poverty; and Aug. 8 on higher education and the impact on traditional values impacting students in a negative manner. While often touching on issues affecting the African-American community, his work has an important impact on interests to all.
