Taxpayers already do a lot for immigrants

In response to Janet Lumm's June 21 letter: The writer asks why people who are vocal regarding illegal immigrants don't offer to house and feed these immigrants until they can be properly vetted so that they can be allowed to stay in the United States. She further states that "so many wealthy people have so much to say about it, but what are they doing to work on a good solution?"

As a member of the middle class, I wish to remind her that, through our property taxes, we all share in educating the children of illegal immigrants - feeding them as well through school breakfast and lunch programs. We also pay for their hospital care through Medicaid and increases in private insurance payments. Hospitals are required to give medical treatment regardless of the ability to pay.

We all do this, whether actively working or retired, and on top of the income taxes most of us pay. All government income comes from the private sector. And, thanks to a graduated income tax scale that taxes higher incomes with higher percentages, those "wealthy" people pay more in all kinds of taxes to fund these programs than those with lower incomes.

In addition to all the writer does as a taxpayer, does she also donate to various charitable organizations (Food for The Poor is one) that provide food, clothing, shelter and medical attention to poor children in countries like Nicaragua? If so, congratulations. If not, perhaps someone else should do it.
