Dangerous precedent

Although it is a sensitive subject, I'm glad the Herald staff had the courage to give their opinion regarding the Buffalo Grove Firefighters Pension Fund Board decision on granting Kevin Hauber's family a full pension citing his cause of death as "job related." As stated, this could set quite a precedent for future decisions and perhaps arguments or lawsuits if other cases were denied. I completely sympathize for the family, but would also hope that life insurance was available through the village or private insurers and would supplement the reduced pension that would be received. I hope the village board does the right thing on a fiduciary basis as opposed to a sympathetic decision.
