Blame user, not weapon for killings

A recent letter to the editor complained about "assault weapons" and the ending of the assault weapons ban. The writer must not have researched the definition of assault weapons or the reason the ban was ended.

An assault weapon definition is based on cosmetics. A rifle that fires one bullet per trigger pull but has a pistol grip, a flash suppressor or a detachable magazine is called an assault weapon.

The 10-year ban on assault weapons was ended because it had no effect on crime per the FBI. Also, when a legal product is used when committing a crime, it is not the product's fault.

It is lack of morals and knowing right from wrong. If the Florida school shooter stabbed 17 to death, would anyone blame the knife? If he burned the school down and killed 17 people would anyone blame the matches?
