Students are making themselves heard

As a teacher, I am so very, very, proud of Stoneman Douglas students and their courageous, eloquent, spokespersons like Emma Gonzalez, Samantha Fuentes, David Hogg and so many others for finally doing what my generation has seemingly forgotten to do, stand up against injustice, for the right, whatever the cost.

These students have now bravely marched to Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., to confront the twin evils of NRA worship and political indifference to tell the so-called adults they want our nation's tragic, bloody epidemic of gun violence stopped, Now.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and President Donald Trump have seemingly listened and proposed some first steps.

So, after years of astonishing public indifference in the face of school shooting after school shooting our children will now have to lead us. We have, for too, too, many years been mired, paralyzed by our astonishing, callous ineptitude to their fate.

As singer Bob Dylan once put it for our generation: "Please get out of the new world if you can't lend a hand, for the times they are a changin'."
