Arming teachers is a bad idea
To the President of the United States Donald Trump: After reading today's Daily Herald newspaper, I cannot refrain from reacting to your suggestion that some teachers have guns in schools.
After working in inner-city Cleveland schools for 30 years as a teacher and administrator, I must state that you have not been a teacher or administrator in a school, especially a public school.
Even if only 20 percent of teachers have guns in schools and receive special training, the situation would be dangerous, in my opinion. And, as a parent, I would take my child out of that school system.
As an alternative to providing guns for 20 percent of teachers, there should be 0 percent of guns in schools. One solution is to install metal detectors at selected entrances monitored by trained security guards hired by the board of education.
Finally, the teacher-student relationship should not be affected by the presence and possible use of a gun or guns.
