Endorsement: Wynes for the GOP in Congress Dist. 10

After almost a decade of swinging back and forth between Democratic U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider and former Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Dold, the 10th Congressional District has some new faces. Dold chose not to run again for the seat he won in 2010 and in 2014, setting off a three-way competition for the Republican nomination on March 20. Unseating a Democratic incumbent in a blue state in this midterm year is a tall order, but the 10th sent Republican Mark Kirk to Congress for a straight decade before Kirk went to the U.S. Senate and Dold first won his seat. That history has both political parties paying close attention to the district and its voters, who show a strong preference for candidates who are socially moderate, fiscally conservative and not glued to the party line. Of the three squaring off in the primary, Jeremy Wynes of Highland Park best fits that profile, and we endorse him for the Republican nomination. A lawyer, Wynes is a first-time candidate with experience in politics as a leader of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the Republican Jewish Coalition. Wynes is opposed by Doug Bennett of Deerfield, whose conservative social views would make him unlikely to prevail in the November general election, and by Sapan Shah of Libertyville, whose acknowledgment that he voted in Chicago for five years after moving to Libertyville opens questions about his judgment and his commitment to the 10th District.
