The whole story on 'St. Buggy Whip' Parish

In Eric Peterson's Dec. 2 article, he neglected an important part of the history of the former pub called the Buggy Whip.

In early 1958, there was no place for over 350 Catholic families to celebrate Sunday Mass. The pastor of St. Theresa Parish in Palatine assigned Rev. Raymond Sullivan to celebrate Sunday Mass in the dining hall of the Buggy Whip Tavern (formerly Easy Street).

That was the beginning of "St. Buggy Whip" Parish.

A group of men would arrive at the Buggy Whip early Sunday morning and air out and sweep the hall and set up chairs, a portable altar and organ, in preparation of the three Masses that were celebrated there.

The crowded hall overflowed into the barroom.

Everything was taken down by 12:30 when the tavern opened for business.

A fundraising drive facilitated the building of the St. Theresa Mission in December 1959 which became St. Hubert Parish in June 1960, formerly "St. Buggy Whip" Parish.
