The teacher as student

Many people believe that wisdom comes with age. Although I do believe that to be true, I think one of the greatest ways that we can learn is through children. Children have an open and unafraid perspective on life that we seem to lose as we grow up.

The Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center is a place where refugee students can come to get tutored and receive extra help with their homework. For the past five years, I have tutored a Burmese elementary school refugee named Syaron through this program. Every Tuesday during the school year, we meet for an hour and work on his homework together. Although I'm the one who is helping him with his homework, I have learned from him just as much as I have taught him.

As time has passed, I have formed a "big brother" relationship with Syaron, which has taught me how to be a leader while still being a friend. Working with him has taught me about patience, work ethic and how to make sure that everyone is included, and I have enjoyed seeing how much he has matured and grown as a student since first meeting with him.
