Buffalo Grove's new indoor golf facility could have competition
The new indoor golf facility at Buffalo Grove's Arboretum Golf Course could face competition across the street with the planned opening of The Golf Lobby at 312 Half Day Road.
The 3,100-square-foot building is in the Woodland Commons shopping center, in the space formerly occupied by M & M Cyclery. It would include three interior golf simulator bays, a food preparation area with chips, pretzels and some oven-cooked items, an 820-square-foot bar/lounge area that will offer alcohol and nonalcoholic drinks, and a gambling cafe.
Buffalo Grove's planning and zoning commission on Wednesday recommended approval of a special use allowing the business to operate there.
A member of the management team, Ravi Maruvada, told commissioners the facility would have state-of-the-art equipment with accurate data for shots and golfing scenarios. Guests would have the opportunity to play famous courses such as Pebble Beach.
Commissioner Adam Moodhe questioned Maruvada whether he was aware of WJ Golf's recently opened operation at the Arboretum, 401 Half Day Road.
Maruvada said he believes there is a market for both facilities.
"Because there are so many golfers, I believe we should be able to serve the community better," he said.
Commissioner Neil Worlikar noted there are a number of vacancies in Woodland Commons.
"Having another business in that area would definitely be a benefit," he said.
Geoff Tollefson, the village's head golf professional, said indoor golf is becoming more popular.
"So, the more the better," he said. "I don't know that we're in direct competition with them because we're obviously going to be a little bit bigger. We've got a few more simulators. We're on a golf course. We've got a big food and beverage component that goes with it. We've got a big patio."
The Arboretum operation has eight simulators, including seven in the main space and a private one for instruction.
The Golf Lobby proposal still needs village board approval before moving forward. The board is scheduled to discuss the plan at its June 20 meeting.
