Rolling Meadows company accused of selling bogus hand sanitizer
The Massachusetts attorney general's office has filed a complaint against a Rolling Meadows-based company, alleging it sold bogus hand sanitizer to schools.
The complaint, filed Monday, alleges School Health Corp. sold more than $100,000 of its hand sanitizer to schools from March 2020 to July 2020.
School Health Corp. said the product - called Theraworx Protect - prevented the spread of COVID-19 with multihour protection, but it didn't include any of the legally required ingredients of sanitizer, the attorney general's office said in a news release.
"This company exploited fears around a growing public health crisis in order to profit by selling a bogus hand sanitizer to schools looking to stop the spread," said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey. "We are suing to hold this company accountable for these illegal actions that put the health of our children, teachers and staff at risk."
Both customers and employees of the company questioned the product's performance and ingredients, according to Massachusetts officials.
The complaint also alleges School Health Corp. staff admitted in an email to a client in March 2020 that there was no reliable evidence the product prevented the spread of the coronavirus. Despite this, the company continued to falsely market the product, the attorney general's office said.
