Daily Herald report

A developer has dropped plans for a proposed gas station at the busy intersection of St. Charles Road and Route 83 in Elmhurst, bowing to neighborhood opposition in the wake of an advisory panel's recommendation against the project.

City officials received correspondence late Monday evening from the property owner and applicant, who has withdraw a request for conditional-use permits needed to allow a gas station and a convenience store with a drive-through on the northwest corner of St. Charles Road and Route 83, a site currently occupied by two vacant restaurants.

The city will be taking no further action on the request for the conditional-use permits for the property, according to a news release late Tuesday.

On the eastern portion of the parcel, the developer had planned to build the station with 16 fueling pumps and a convenience store with a drive-through tenant. Another tenant would move into an existing building with another drive-through window on the western portion of the property.

But neighbors mobilized against the project with a Facebook group, yard signs and standing-room-only crowds at city hall during project meetings. Their concerns with traffic and congestion resonated with the city's zoning and planning commissioners, who last month issued a recommendation to reject the developer's request. The city council would have gotten the final say.
