Mac's on Slade still needs Palatine to OK documents to reopen

Mac's on Slade in downtown Palatine still needs to submit an updated village liquor license application and file correct state documents before the bar and grill may reopen, officials said.

On Jan. 30, Mac's parent company Jam 5 Inc. entered into an agreed order at a hearing that resulted in its business license being suspended immediately over the purported document violations. Mac's has been closed since then.

Mac's co-owner Jeff Van Horn said he expected to submit by today, at the latest, the documentation the village needs. Palatine officials said Mac's business license suspension will be lifted if everything checks out.

What prompted the business license hearing on the matter last week were accusations Laurie Joseph was not disclosed as a stockholder in Jam 5 Inc., in violation of local law, according to village documents. Palatine Village Attorney Patrick Brankin said officials became aware of the alleged ordinance violations by Mac's about two weeks ago.

Under the order, Joseph was directed to be fingerprinted by Palatine police like all other liquor license holders. The order also states Jam 5 must submit the complete, updated liquor license application and revise its corporate filing with the Illinois secretary of state.

Brankin must verify Mac's documentation before the license suspension is lifted. Any violation of the order or other local laws could lead to a revocation of all licenses for the establishment at 117 W. Slade St., according to the village.

Mac's won't be guaranteed continued operation even with the reinstatement of its business license, Palatine Village Manager Reid Ottesen said. Mac's will need formal liquor commission approval for its license to sell alcohol. The commission is made up of Mayor Jim Schwantz and the rest of the village council.

"Kind of the way it stood with us is that the order that I put forth would be that they need to do a series of things to the satisfaction of the village attorney," Ottesen said. "With that, they could reopen pending the village council action on their liquor license."

Village council members last May approved a special use transfer from the establishment's previous owner, William "Mac" Reitz, to Van Horn and Maegan Smith. Van Horn and Smith managed Mac's before buying the business last year.
